DJ Coolma’s New Single: “I See, I Hear”
Have you seen Yesterday? I’m talking bout the comedy filmーthe world without The Beatles. I highly recommend it not just for laughs but for its music. Himesh Patel sings famous Beatles songs beautifully.
The Beatles broke up 1970 but it’s hard to escape their influence even today if you are a musician. The impact of their music was so big that they became the foundation of all current popular music. You could say that they were the big bang that created the pop music universe.
One of my favorite Beatles song is “Michelle.” The lyrics start with French words. Paul McCartney sings about falling in love with a French woman and his frustration because he knows so little French to express the depth of his love.
One day when I was going through my sample libraries, I came across a bunch of recorded French phrases. The phrase Je vois, j’entends (I see, I hear in English) hit me suddenly. I immediately made a mental connection between the French phrase with The Beatles’ “Michelle.”
After the light bulb went off in my head, the song unfolded itself. A spoken phrase can suggest many things. The key, the tempo, and even the harmony too.
I took another inspiration from The Beatles—the way they expanded their sound palette with classic orchestral sound in their later years. I expanded my usual electronic sound palette with more traditional instruments such as strings and horns.
When you add such traditional sounds, it’s hard to escape classic and old school vibe but I believe I’m serving rather sophisticated tribes of dance music fans. So, it’s fine with me.
Don’t get me wrong when I say sophisticated fans. It just means those who dig a little deeper than the current Top 40 or 100 and are willing to listen to all kinds of music. Someone who is not afraid of walking the less traveled road.
If you take some time to listen to what you consider old music in any genre of music, you’ll be amazed how some of those songs sound still relevant and you’ll wonder how you could miss such good stuff for so long.
Anyhow, here we are, “I See, I Hear” is my fourth single release. It’s a funky deep house track with an old school vibe and a French vocal hook. Although the music has a classic feel to it, I believe the meaning of the hook resonates with the time we live in now.
When I think about the phrase “I See, I Hear,” my train of thought goes like this: what do you see and hear?…what is being heard and listened to?… Edward Snowden…a whistleblower…CIA…hackers breaking into your computer…Donald Trump…authoritarian government…China…democracy…and goes on and on…
Mine was rather worldly but I wish you a pleasant train of thought while bobbing your hard or dancing to “I See, I Hear.”
Have a nice music adventure. Bon voyage!
